한국 전통 용의 특징과 상징성을 타이포그래피와 3D 그래픽으로 재해석한 프로젝트입니다. 상상 속 존재를 가상의 공간에 구현하고, 이를 다시 현실로 끌어내어 상상과 현실을 아우르는 초현실적인 용의 기운을 담아냈습니다.
용의 순 우리말인 '미르'를 표현한 영문 커스텀 타이포그래피 'MIREU(H)' 는 익숙한 단어를 낯선 형태로 제시하여 시선을 머물게 하고, 끝 발음이 ‘U’와 ‘H’의 중간 지점에서 맺히도록 설계하여 실제 한국어 발음이 가진 고유의 잔향을 재현하고자 했습니다. 이러한 설계를 바탕으로 용의 이빨과 발톱, 비늘 등 세부적인 묘사를 부드러운 움직임의 3D 그래픽으로 구현하며 프로젝트의 완성도를 높였습니다.
빈티지한 프린팅 질감을 더한 반팔 티셔츠는 세월의 흔적이 자연스레 느껴지는 섬세한 프린팅 질감 표현으로 유난히 애착이 가서 시간이 지나도 오랫동안 간직하고 있는 티셔츠에서 영감을 받아 제작하였습니다.
입고 빨기를 반복해 프린팅이 벗겨지고 갈라져 낡아버린 티셔츠처럼 소중한 기억들을 간직하고 있어 함부로 버릴 수 없는 익숙한 물건들에 대한 향수를 불러일으키고 특별하고 의미 있게 기억되길 바라는 마음을 그래픽으로 담았습니다.
라이터와 물컵은 용의 속성에서 출발한 오브젝트입니다. 청룡의 속성인 물(생명력)과 그와 대비되는 불(에너지)이라는 이질적인 원소를 하나의 시리즈에 묶어냄으로써, 상징이 가진 시각적 경계를 넓히고 서로 반대되는 속성을 아우르는 이 프로젝트의 컨셉과 핵심을 오브젝트를 통해 비유적으로 표현했습니다.
This project reinterprets the characteristics and symbolism of the traditional Korean dragon through typography and 3D graphics. By manifesting an imaginary being within a virtual space and bringing it back into reality, I sought to capture the surreal energy of the dragon that bridges the gap between imagination and the tangible world.
The custom English typography 'MIREU(H)', representing the pure Korean word for dragon (Mir), presents a familiar word in an unfamiliar form to arrest the viewer's attention. The design is specifically engineered so that the final pronunciation lingers somewhere between 'U' and 'H', recreating the unique resonance found in native Korean phonetics. Building upon this design foundation, I enhanced the project's fidelity by implementing intricate details—such as the dragon’s teeth, claws, and scales—through 3D graphics and fluid motion.
The short-sleeved t-shirts, featuring a vintage printing texture, were inspired by those cherished garments we keep for years because they naturally carry the traces of time. By replicating the delicate, worn-out texture of prints that crack and peel through repeated wear and washing, the graphics evoke a sense of nostalgia for familiar objects imbued with precious memories that are too meaningful to discard.
The lighter and water cup are objects derived from the dragon's elemental attributes. By grouping the contrasting elements of water (vitality), a property of the Blue Dragon, and fire (energy) into a single series, I expanded the visual boundaries of the symbolism. This metaphorical use of objects encapsulates the project's core concept: encompassing and harmonizing opposing forces.
